Old Pal

Rye, Campari, and dry vermouth, stirred. The classic is equal parts. I double the rye and halve the vermouth.

A rosy red Old Pal in a stemmed glass, set against a wall of green leaves

Method

  1. Add the rye, Campari, and vermouth to a mixing glass with plenty of ice.

  2. Stir until the outside of the glass is properly cold, about 20 seconds. Stirred drinks want dilution without bubbles, so do not shake this one.

  3. Strain into a chilled glass.

Notes from the line

The classic spec is 1 oz. each of rye, Campari, and dry vermouth. If you like vermouth more than I do, start there.

Campari is the loudest thing in the glass. More rye keeps it from running the drink.
